Feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org and welcome to my blog. I’m Cat Sadowski and I’m a photographic artist! I majored in art education at Monmouth University, West Long Branch, NJ but never finished my degree because I realized that making, not teaching, art was my true calling. Then in the summer of 1970 I exhibited in my first professional art show and the rest, as they say, is history. Over the next 40+ years I made art because MAKING art is what makes me breathe. I was always asked to teach my techniques so along the way I taught hundreds of people how to express themselves creatively in classrooms all over the country. Through my teaching, exhibiting and online selling I was able to help my family meet their bills and have a bit left over for some ‘fun’ things. But as the years went along I began to dream of expressing myself for myself and no one else. That meant I had to center on the one thing that gave my life meaning.
After many starts and stops over a 14 month period, I realized that it was photography that gave me goosebumps, made my breathing go a little faster, and made my heart skip a beat. My father was a professional photographer and my daughter has her degree in photography. My father taught me how to ‘see’ and I passed that along to my daughter but somewhere along the line I forgot that ‘seeing’ the world around me was more important than being ‘au courant’ and presenting to the public the latest and greatest art for them to buy.
My ‘word’ for 2014 is ‘authenticity’…because being authentic in my creative life is more important than being what everyone around me has come to expect. I don’t want to paint another ‘funky’ canvas with bright colors; or create a sign that says you’ve reached the beach’; or solder a pendant that says I love my Mom. All of those things had purpose in their own place and time but not anymore. From now on I am intent on expressing ME. The me that is most at home with her eye pressed up against a view finder seeing what no one else on this planet will ever see in that moment or that place in time. It’s breathtaking to see a new sunset; a baby’s first smile; a fog laden country road. And the JOY that comes from post processing those images to create what I SAW in that moment in time is beyond satisfying…it’s down right addictive!
Thanks for taking this time with me…and getting to know the REAL Cat.
